Hi everyone,
I know, I know, another 'Myst: Masterpiece Edition doesn't work, please help'-Thread. This game is known to be one of the problematic games here on Good Old Games because of Quicktime, from what I gathered. I am going to have a hard time explaining my problems here, because the game runs very inconsistently.. Or to put it simply, it runs sometimes, and sometimes it doesn't. This is me trying to play the game on Windows 10, for the record.
Here's my problem:
First, I installed Myst: Masterpiece Edition without doing anything special. That means, I used the installer to install the game and Quicktime Lite. No compatibility settings or anything else were changed. Result: The game does not run. It changes my screen's resolution to whatever the game's resolution was, and you get a black screen with white borders. No sound, no video, nothing - you won't see your cursor and you can't exit out of the game in general either.
Then I changed compatibility settings, tried a bunch of settings, and got the game to at least run to some extent. You can hear sound and see your cursor, but you are still staring at a black screen (no white borders). That means the game is running without Quicktime, I am guessing.
Of course, I uninstalled Myst: Masterpiece Edition (I will always write the full title of the game, excuse me) and also removed whatever Quicktime I had on my system. Then, I just reinstalled it the same way I did the first time and hit 'launch game' from the installer menu. 'Hooray, it works!', I exclaimed. Videos, Sound, and everything was fine other than the fact that it didn't run in fullscreen. Sadly, I exited the game, and didn't get it to run again since. I swear that I didn't change any compatibility settings or anything else, but now I am back to the the white borders and the black screen.
So, naturally, I uninstalled Myst: Masterpiece Edition again, alongside Quicktime, and installed it again, alongside Quicktime, and launched it again from the installer menu. White borders. Black screen.
Pretty MYSTerious problem, don't you think? Me neither. Myst rarely ever worked for me since Windows XP. In fact, if it wasn't for that one time that it did work, I wouldn't even be writing this thread. I know there is no voodoo magic involved or anything, and I know I should be expecting consistent results (and I swear that I do expect them), but I am not getting any.
Can anyone provide me with any hints or solutions? (Other than downloading RealMyst: Masterpiece Edition, I mean)
Thank you very much!

I think you might get an arrow on the screen and if you go to the top you should see a Menu Drop Down for other options.
I went back and reran the GOG installer for the game. This time I answered I wanted to install QT Lite 4.1.0. Also there is another question that asks you to install the Quick Time App in the check box on the next screen. I did uncheck the associate MP3 sound files since I use VLC for MP3 playback. However this had no negative effect for audio playback in the game during the intro.
Buy Myst For Windows 10
I launched Myst Masterpiece off the desktop icon the GOG installer created and it ran fine.
So I can confirm it does work on Windows XP SP3.
As for Windows 10 I haven't installed it yet so the only thing I can suggest is you uninstall the game from Windows Programs and then use the GOG game installer and make sure you install the QT Lite 4.1.0 and make sure on the following page you have the check box for installing Quick Time. You could try unchecking the MP3 playback association as I don't think this will have any negative affect unless you have no application associated for MP3 files.
Anyhow I would also try to enable Windows XP compatibility mode if it exists in Windows 10.
If this still doesn't work look for Windows Virtual PC for Windows XP. I remember Windows 7 had a XP Virtual PC add on you could download and maybe there is one for Windows 10 or it might be able use the same addon.
I think the culprit if you get no video animation but you still hear audio is due to the QT Lite 4.1.0 not working on Windows 10. If that's the case then you might be screwed there if you tried everything else I've suggested above.

Not sure if you ever figured this out, but it's pretty complicated. This solution was done on Windows 7 64 bit, but I assume it is similar on Windows 10, as long as you have compatibility mode available.
Some of this stuff has been said before, but first you need to install Quicktime 4. There is a website 'oldversion.com' where you can download QT 4.
From here you need to run the game in compatibility mode. Hopefully Windows 10 has the 'Windows 98/ME' as a setting. Use that. If you use anything else the game will freeze. Using Windows XP SP2 worked for me for a while, but the game will consistently freeze and it won't be worth playing. It's gotta be Windows 98/ME.
Lastly, you need to 'disable visual themes'. This will permit you to save and load games. Otherwise you can play but you can't save, which is pointless.
This all took me an hour to figure out, so I sure hope it works for you!

@Truedosgamer. I'm running Win 7 Pro 64 bit. I've tried almost everything on all these threads and posts from numerous places. this is the only thing that worked. I just unclicked the mp3 coding box when installing quicktime. I then ran the game without using any compatibilities and it worked. I only ran the game 5 mins but there was absolutely no crashes. I did the clock tower without problems, the generator without problems and the stairs to the tower about 6 times without crashes. These are the places that crashed on me before unclicking the mp3 coding box. Sound is great without static or issues. This is the only fix that has worked for me.
Thank you so so much. Love this game

No problem. Glad my method worked for Window 7 64-bit. I've only tested it on XP Pro 32-bit SP3 so far and that was one of the original issues I wanted to make sure what made the game worked properly on first install. I never did try MP3 association since it was already linked to VLC so I never experienced the problem you had with the sound. My original issues were graphical so I did several runs with different options to figure out what finally worked. Although I didn't play the game through to the end I have no idea if any problems would come around since this game was originally meant to run on Windows 95 / 98 and XP had the best compatibility to play it. Thank you so so much. Love this game

dbrizzee: @Truedosgamer.
TrueDosGamer: No problem.
Myst For Windows 10 Download
Windows 7 64-bit with XP compatibility mode enabled should be your backup plan if you experience any other issues playing it. Hi. I am currently running Myst Masterpiece Edition in Windows 10 Pro as an administrator and I haven't had any issues at all.
